Group Life Insurance
All full-time employees are provided term group life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance through the VRS, administered by Securian Financial (1-800-447-2258). The amount of the basic life insurance benefit for death due to natural causes is two times the employee's annual salary. For accidental death, the life insurance is double the natural death benefit, or four times the annual base salary. The Town of Front Royal pays all premiums for this coverage.
Changes to your beneficiaries can be made online through your myVRS account. By going to https://myvrs.varetire.org/login/ and creating an account, under ‘Manage My Benefits’ you can update that information and it is effective immediately. Paper forms are also readily available upon request or employees can contact VRS directly (1-888-827-3847).
Optional Group Life Insurance
Additional life insurance is available to full-time employees for up to eight times the employee's salary. Coverage may also be purchased for spouse and/or eligible child(dren), and is paid via payroll deduction. The employee pays the full cost for this coverage.
Short-Term Disability Insurance
Short-term disability provides income replacement if an employee is out of work for their own personal injury or illness. Participating employees receive 60% of their base weekly earnings after the required waiting period for a qualifying injury or illness. Benefit payments are made for a maximum period of 26 weeks.

- Optional STD benefits are available at the employee’s option and cost.
- Monthly premiums are based on the employee’s base annual salary.
VRS Hybrid (Reed Group 1-877-928-7021)
- Optional STD benefits are available at the employee’s option and cost for the first year of employment.
- Short-Term and Long-Term Disability benefits are provided at no cost to the employee following 12 consecutive months of employment.
Employees may participate in AFLAC to provide additional supplemental insurance benefits at their option and cost. Protection plans are offered through payroll deductions to all full-time and part-time employees, to include Hospital, Accident, Cancer, Critical Illness, Life and Disability coverages. The Town offers tuition assistance to eligible employees for coursework toward a college degree, professional certification, or developmental training, to support the Town's goal of attracting and retaining a qualified workforce. Preliminary approval for tuition reimbursement is obtained from the department director and the Town Manager before course begins. The Town pays up to $400 per course, and up to $1,600 per fiscal year.
