CLICK IT OR TICKET CAMPAIGN

May 21 - June 3, 2012

The Front Royal Police Department will be participating in National "CLICK IT OR TICKET" Campaign.

"The Front Royal Police Department wishes to remind motorists that wearing a seat belt can mean the difference between surviving a crash with little or no injuries, or suffering a serious injury or death without a seatbelt" states Chief Furr. "We will continue our effots with law enforcement agencies across the nation in promoting traffic safety by participating in programs such as "Click it or Ticket" in order to keep both drivers and passengers safe during the Memorial Day holiday period., adds Chief Furr. Thousands of state and local law enforcement and highway safety officiials accross the nation will participate in the enforcement mobiization.

Traffic Enforcement Officer Donald Orye adds, "Curretnly, the state seatbelt usage rate for drivers is 81.8%. I conducted a seatbult survey on May 10th in the Town of Front Royal which showed a usage rate of 80%, so we are slightly below the state average. Over the past years, we have remained in the mid to high 80% range but this year we are lower. We want to increase this number in an effort to keep motorists safer on the roadways." In 2011, 306 motorists were killed due to being unrestrained in Virginia. "Statistics show that wearing a seat belt does make a difference in a crash. Our crash figures have been declining over the past several years. In 2006, there were 584 crashes in the Town but in 2011, we had 185. We have made great strides in reducing these numbers, but we are still experiencing an average of 70 injuries due to be unrestrained", add Orye.

Statistics show that the highest at-risk group is the 18--34 age range. In 2011, 102 people within this age group lost their lives due to not being restrained in Virginia. "This age group will be a focus area for the department. With such a high number of young people being hurt and killed on our roadways, our department will make the effort to educate and enforce seat belt usage for our young drivers as well as all others", adds Officer Orye.
