The Appalachian Trail is a continuous footpath that is 2,160 unbroken miles and extends from Maine to Georgia along the Appalachian Mountain. One hundred miles of the trail passes through the Shenandoah National Park south of Big Meadow, between Thorton Gap and Front Royal. It is considered a premier recreational hiking trail with gentle grades, climbs rarely exceeding 500 - 1,000 feet and roadside amenities. There are 400 miles of trails (interpretive, non-motorized & motorized) over 190,000 acres in the Lee Ranger District of the Forest. There are 6 interpretive trails ranging from 0.2 miles - 0.6 miles. This trail is located adjacent to Commerce Avenue and runs 1 1/4 miles. It is designed for walkers, runners, bikers and hikers. It runs from Front Street on the north side of Town to E. Main Street on the southern end of Town. The Town of Front Royal oversees the Trail. |

Enjoy approximately 500 trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachain Trail. Many trails are accessed from Skyline Drive. Some short trails lead to a waterfall or viewpoint. Some longer and more difficult trails penetrate deep into the forest and wilderness. Several publications that list hiking trails and maps are available at the Park Visitor Centers. To Backpack in the park you must obtain a permit from the Ranger Station. There is no cost for this permit, but a fine will be levied on those caught without a permit.
