The seven men commemorated on this monument died as a result of the order. On a circular lot at the top of the hill, known as Soldier's Circle, lay the remains of 276 soldiers representing each of the thirteen states of the Confederacy. Wayside Theatre presents
Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming
A Bluegrass Gospel Musical
Written by Connie Ray
Conceived by Alan Bailey
Musical Arrangements by Mike Craver

Opens January 26, 2008

It's October, 1945, and the gospel-singing Sanders Family is back together again. The war is over and America's years of prosperity are just beginning. But there's another kind of rite of passage at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where Reverent Mervin Oglethorpe is giving his last service. He's been called to preach in Texas, and he's already bought a ten-gallon hat and is preparing to ride into the sunset with his wife June, who is eight months pregnant. Tomorrow morning, young Dennis Sanders takes over as Mount Pleasant's pastor. Join the Sanders Family as they send Mervin and June off in style, with hilarious and touching stories and twenty-five toe-tapping Bluegrass Gospel favorites. Directed by Guest Director John Healy with Resident Musical Director Steve Przybylski, Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming stars the cast from Smoke on the Mountain and Sander’s Family Christmas: Larry Dahlke (Forever Plaid), Richard Follett (The Buddy Holly Story), Elizabeth Albert (It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show), Thomasin Savaiano (Lost Highway), Steve Przybylski (Forever Plaid) Pam Pendelton, and David Maga.
